Fragment of a small pediment preserving part of the lower straight section and the upper right oblique section of the tympanum. In the center of the fragment a naked winged erote is masterfully carved, with delicate drills which make an intriguing chiaroscuro rendering. Details of the head and wings are rendered with delicate strokes of the drill to defining a game of chiaroscuro.
Not to be confused with a sarcophagus relief, the present sculpture refers to a rare category of monuments: pairs of small pediments decorated by erotes placed on the sides of a bust, a portrait, otherwise sometimes holding a garland.
A good comparable for the present artwork is the tympanum exhibited in the Vatican Museums: H. Wrede, Das Mausoleum der Claudia Semne und die bürgerliche Plastik der Kaiserzeit, in Römische Mitteilungen 78, 1971, pp. 125-166, pl. 74-90.
