This delightful fragment depicts a bucolic scene, framed by two thin brown strips. In the foreground, within a field near a farm (of which only a part of the wall on the left is visible), two cattle graze peacefully, with one positioned near the right edge of the fragment, while the other dominates the heart of the scene. In the background, the mighty walls of a city stand tall.
This image is one of the many decorative paintings that adorned prestigious residences in roman times. They were cleverly placed at the center of large monochromatic panels, creating the illusion of paintings hung directly on the wall. A similar example can be found in tablinum H of the House of M. Lucretius Fronto in Pompeii.
